It’s been three weeks since your back locked up while you were loading the car for a camping trip.
Everyone has an opinion. Your sister swears by her chiropractor. A coworker says physical therapy was the only thing that worked for him. Your doctor gave you a prescription for muscle relaxers and said, “If it’s not better in a few weeks, try PT.” Meanwhile you’re sleeping badly, sitting at work like you’re made of glass, and wondering how long you’re supposed to wait before somebody actually does something.
Standing at that fork in the road is exhausting when you’re the one in pain. You don’t want to pick wrong and lose another month. You just want someone to tell you clearly where to start.
So here’s my answer. For most back and neck pain, start with a chiropractor. Here’s why, and when physical therapy is the better first stop.
Why a Chiropractor Is a Smart First Call
You can come in directly. You don’t need a referral to see a chiropractor in Oregon. If your back went out on Monday, you can be examined this week instead of waiting for a primary care appointment to get permission.
You get a diagnosis, not just a treatment. In Oregon, chiropractors are licensed as chiropractic physicians. I examine you, diagnose what’s irritated in your spine, joints, muscles and nerves, and order imaging when your exam calls for it. Then I tell you exactly what’s going on.
Hands-on care and rehab in one plan. In my office you get gentle chiropractic care to calm the irritated area and get the joints moving, plus the specific exercises that make the change last. You don’t have to stitch together two providers to get both.
The research supports it. The American College of Physicians recommends spinal manipulation as a first-line, non-drug treatment for low back pain. Studies have also found that people who see a chiropractor first for back pain are less likely to end up on opioids.
When Physical Therapy Should Come First
Physical therapists are excellent at what they do, and there are clear cases where I want you starting with one:
- After surgery. A new knee, a repaired shoulder or a spine surgery calls for a structured rehab program run with your surgeon.
- After a major injury that needs a long, supervised program, such as rebuilding after a serious ligament tear.
- When your main need is supervised strength training, rather than restoring motion and calming pain.
The Best Answer Is Often Both
This doesn’t have to be a competition. I co-manage patients with physical therapists and medical doctors across the Rogue Valley. When you need more than I provide, I refer you, share what I’m seeing and keep everyone working toward the same goal. When a PT or physician sends someone to me, I do the same in return. You get a team instead of a maze.
Meet Your Guide
I’m Dr. Noah Volz, a chiropractic physician in Ashland. My practice focuses on gentle, light-touch chiropractic care for active adults whose back and neck pain keeps coming back. Your body has learned to guard, and my job is to help it feel safe enough to change. In practice that means precise adjustments when your body is ready, mobilization, flexion-distraction for the low back, soft-tissue work, kinesiotape and corrective exercise. You can read more on my gentle chiropractic page.
Your Plan in 3 Simple Steps
- Contact Dr. Volz. Send a short note through my contact page about what happened and what’s still hurting.
- Get examined. A thorough exam, a clear diagnosis and your first treatment, plus a referral if you need another provider on your team.
- Follow a clear plan. Hands-on care and the exercises that make it last, with visits that space out as you improve.
Stop Waiting to Find Out
You don’t need to spend another three weeks guessing. Contact Dr. Volz, tell me what’s going on, and we’ll get you started on the right path this week. I treat people from Ashland, Medford, Talent, Phoenix and across the Rogue Valley.
Three Months From Now
Picture next season’s camping trip. You load the car without thinking about it. You sleep on the ground and wake up stiff only in the normal way. You know which two exercises to do if your back starts to talk to you, and you know who to call if it really flares.
The real mistake isn’t choosing the “wrong” profession. It’s choosing nothing. Back pain that’s left alone changes how you move, and every month of guarding makes it harder to unwind. A thorough exam this week beats a perfect decision next month.
Common Questions
Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Oregon?
No. You can come in directly. Some insurance plans have their own authorization rules, so it’s worth checking your coverage.
Can I see a chiropractor and a physical therapist at the same time?
Yes, and it works well when we’re coordinating. Tell each of us about the other, and I’ll make sure your home program stays simple instead of doubling up.
What if I’ve already tried PT and I’m still stuck?
That’s one of the most common reasons people come to see me. The joints may still be restricted, or your body may still be guarding. A fresh, thorough exam is how we find out which one is holding you back.
When I’ll Send You Somewhere Else First
I screen every new patient for the rare signs that need emergency or medical care first. If you have any of these, go to the emergency room or call your doctor now:
- New trouble controlling your bladder or bowels, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
- Rapidly worsening weakness in an arm or leg
- Fever, unexplained weight loss or a history of cancer along with new back pain
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or pain spreading into the jaw or left arm
